On the whole it hasn’t been a bad summer, with the odd scorcher here and there. While I didn’t get a chance to go abroad, I have to say I was exceptionally lucky with all the weather I encountered on my weekends away venturing around bonnie Scotland and her islands.
After making Bourbon brownies it only seemed right that I had a go at Custard Cream blondies.
Brace yourself, tea time is coming…
While baking trends continue to change at a dizzying pace, with jazzy new creations such as ‘gravity defying’ cakes, ‘loaded’ drip cakes and even ‘raw’ cakes it is nice to know that the humble scone will always remain a constant tea time favourite.
HOWEVER that is not the say that the scone has been left behind in the fast changing baking world. The other day I stopped to ogle the window display at the Bluebird café in Edinburgh where they sell an array of different scone varieties including maple bacon, blueberry and lemon curd, peanut butter, banoffee and even jaffa cake. While the concept of a jaffa cake scone is something that would make my grandmother and even mother wince, I was in awe.
While my Cranberry and Coconut and Chocolate and Banana scones may not be as zany as some of the Bluebird’s creations, I hope they do a good job at showing that scones don’t always need to be just plain or fruit.
p.s. If you don’t watch Game of Thrones, you should. It’s very good.
